Catfish are considered one of the water’s top predator fish. The fight of a catfish is not like your feisty bass nor like your aggressive panfish. When you first hook into a catfish, you might think you’re snagged, but when your line starts to move and the drag starts to scream,  you know you’re hooked up with a river monster.





There are three main types of catfish: the channel catfish, the blue catfish, and the flathead catfish. The channel catfish is probably the most popular type of catfish that many anglers catch. They fight hard, and make a good fish fry. They don’t get as big as the blue or flathead catfish. However, one can argue they are pound-for-pound the hardest fighting catfish of the three.





The blue catfish is the “big momma.” These brute fish can exceed 100 lbs, and it’s a thrill to catch a giant blue when you’re catfish fishing. The flathead catfish is your top river predator. They are one of the most territorial fish in a lake/river and will not pass up a meal when it enters its domain. Whether it’s cut bait or live bait…it will take it!

WHERE AND WHEN TO CATCH CATFISH





Catfish can thrive in many water systems, from shallow, warm ponds to fast rivers. While different species may like varying habitats, there are general areas that tend to hold catfish.





During the day, look for catfish in muddy water areas, such as a tributary and its outflow. Also good are deep structures, like river bends, the base of drop-offs, deep holes, and humps. Catfish will also hold around cover, like standing timber and deep weed edges.





Night brings excellent fishing. Catfish use their heightened senses of smell and taste, along with their barbels (whiskers) to locate food in the dark. Flats, bars, points, shorelines and weedy areas are common spots to catch prowling cats at night.

It doesn't take much tackle to catch catfish. The following's a basic kit for small to average-sized fish.





  • A 6- to 7-foot, medium-heavy spinning rod and a reel spooled with 14-pound or stronger abrasion-resistant monofilament
  • Terminal tackle including: 1/0 to 3/0 circle or bait hooks, # 2 to #6 treble hooks, 0.5- to 2-ounce egg sinkers, split shots, #7 to #10 swivels, bobbers, beads and jig heads
  • Live worms or minnows, cut-bait, or smelly artificial bait, like catfish chunks or dough
  • Boat or shore-style rod holder
  • Net or lip-grip for landing fish
  • A pair of long-nosed pliers for removing hooks




HOW TO CATCH CATFISH





A slip-sinker rig's a popular set-up given that catfish are often located near bottom. It's made by threading a sinker on the mainline, then a bead. Next, the mainline is tied to one end of a swivel. On the swivel's other end is a 1 to 2 foot monofilament leader, followed by the hook. The rig can be left on bottom or hovered above the floor when drifting an area.





A float rig's another option. Simply add a float above the weight on a slip-sinker rig. Use this rig to drift bait slowly through wood-rich catfish lairs or over weed without snagging on bottom or in cover. Drifting a float also helps cover water from the bank.





A jig head (link to the jig head article) tipped with bait will also catch catfish. Lift and drop the jig along bottom. Occasionally holding it still often leads to a bite.





Sometimes catfish hit hard and quick. Other times they play with the bait before taking it fully. When in doubt, set the hook. A common rig-fishing strategy is feeding line to a nibbling catfish, so it won't feel resistance. When the fish steadily takes line, it's hook-set time.

Learning how to catch big bass takes dedication, extensive trial and error, and lots of time on the water. You have to earn every pound of that lunker you're after. That said, there are several basic tenets of trophy bass fishing that you can implement now to begin your journey to bigger bass.





1. Decide That You Will Only Catch Big Bass





Fishing is a mental sport. While weather conditions and gear selections are important, it's often your mindset that dictates your success on the water. This is especially true when you're after trophy bass. You have to decide that you will catch big bass, and only big bass.





In any given lake, there are far fewer large bass than there are small or medium-sized bass. Catching a 12-pound fish becomes a game of numbers and the odds are stacked against you. So, before you go after trophy-sized bass, you have to accept the fact that you won't catch as many fish. In fact, it's possible that you'll get flat-out skunked.





Big bass are solitary creatures; they don't hang out in schools like smaller fish do. So, if you find yourself in an area that's producing lot's of small fish, pull anchor and go somewhere else. It can be tough to pry yourself away from a spot with lots of action, but it's something you must do if you want to catch the biggest fish in the lake.





2. Locate a Bass Trail





Big bass are generally pretty lazy. In their younger years, they may have traveled greater distances to feed, but once they get old and heavy, they find a nice piece of real estate with plenty of food and call it home. That's not to say they don't move around at all; large bass typically have a small home range in which they move throughout the day.





A bass's home range is generally marked by a series of structures that forms a sort of trail or corridor — a bass trail. Bass trails can be made up of submerged logs, downed trees, thick grass beds, dense weeds, and docks, among other things. Large bass move from place to place along their trail throughout the day, but won't stray far into other territories.





Once you find a good bass trail, mark it in your GPS or fishfinder and return to it frequently at different times of the day. Take notes of when and where you get strikes and catch fish. Then, you can start patterning the fish and pretty soon you'll know where, when, and how to catch big bass consistently.





3. Fish Parallel to Structure





One of the best ways to fish a bass trail and other areas with structure is to work your lure parallel along the structure line. Fishing parallel keeps your lure in the strike zone for longer, increasing your chances of getting the lure in front of a bass's face.





When fishing parallel, position your boat so that you're far enough away from a likely bass-holding spot, but close enough to make accurate casts. Once you're in position, work your lure close to the line of structure. Pitch and flip jigs, work spinnerbaits and crankbaits, or swim topwaters past every fishy-looking spot.





4. Throw Bigger Lures





Big fish eat big meals. This goes along with the sentiment that big bass are lazy. They don't feed all day long like smaller bass do. Instead, they go for meals that yield the biggest return on their energy expended. So, if you want to start catching bigger bass, you better stock up on bigger lures.





Big lures not only entice the appetite of large bass, they also keep smaller fish off your hook. If you try a bunch of different spots and are still only catching small fish, try switching to a bigger lure to weed through the school to get to the bigger fish.





Big spinnerbaits with long trailers, jumbo-sized plastic worms, and giant swimbaits that imitate the local baitfish can all do the trick.





Fish large lures much slower than you would small lures. Sometimes all you need is a nice slow, steady retrieve. Other times, you may want to try incorporating pauses and twitches to help your lure imitate an injured baitfish.





5. Fish Where Others Don't, Won't, or Can't





Big bass are big for a reason. They've managed to successfully escape the hooks and coolers of many anglers throughout their lives.





When hunting for trophy bass, seek out the thickest, nastiest cover you can find — places most anglers would consider unfishable. Get creative and take some risks. You might lose a few lures, but the opportunity to catch double-digit bass will be worth it.





If you find a promising looking weedline, chances are the biggest bass won't be on the edge where you might find smaller fish. Instead, they'll be back in the thickest part of the weed bed. Try to pitch and flip heavy weedless jigs as far back into the weeds as you can. Be sure to use heavy enough line as you'll face a serious game of tug-of-war to get a big bass out of the weeds.





If you find a cove full of downed trees, try to fish as far back into the tangle as you can. This style of fishing requires finessed casting and precise lure placement. Probe all the likely spots and hang on because the biggest bass of your life could strike at any moment.

Smoked trout pate

Ingredients




  • 400g smoked trout fillet

  • 280g unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 tablespoons horseradish cream

  • Pinch of cayenne pepper

  • 100ml (5 tablespoons) creme fraiche or sour cream

  • 40ml (2 tablespoons) lemon juice, plus extra to serve

  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill














Method





  • Step 1


    Place all ingredients in a food processor and process until combined, then season with salt and pepper. Place in a bowl, cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Spread on toasted bread and drizzle over extra lemon juice.

Ingredients

  • 1 smoked trout, skin and bones removed (to give 250g flesh)
  • 150ml milk
  • 2 garlic cloves, smashed
  • 3 thyme sprigs
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon (or to taste)
  • 3 slices square pumpernickel bread (see Notes)

Method

  • Step 1 Finely shred the smoked trout with a fork and place in a bowl. Heat milk gently with the garlic and thyme until just under the boil, then leave to cool for 5 minutes and strain.
  • Step 2 Add the warm milk gradually to trout, beating with a fork. Beat in oil. Add chives, juice and pepper to taste. Taste for salt, but smoked trout can be quite salty already.
  • Step 3 Toast the bread until crisp and hard, then cut each into 4 squares. Serve the warm brandade with pumpernickel.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices prosciutto
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 single chicken breast fillets, halved horizontally
  • 1 x 45g can anchovy fillets, drained
  • 250g (1 cup) good-quality whole egg mayonnaise

  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Method

  • Step 1 Place the prosciutto in a non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook for 1-2 minutes each side or until golden and crisp. Drain on paper towel. Set aside to cool. Break into medium-sized pieces.
  • Step 2 Heat the oil in the frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 4 minutes each side or until golden and cooked through. Set aside for 5 minutes to rest. Thinly slice diagonally across the grain.
  • Step 3 Coarsely mash the anchovies. Combine the mayonnaise, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and anchovies in a bowl.
  • Step 4 Cut the baguettes lengthways (do not cut all the way through) and spread with the mayonnaise mixture. Divide the lettuce, chicken, prosciutto and parmesan among the baguettes. Press to close. Cut each baguette crossways into 4 portions. Use kitchen string to tie at regular intervals to secure filling. Serve.

  • 750g chat potatoes
  • 600g salmon fillet, skin and bones removed

  • Step 2 Cut salmon into 3cm x 4cm pieces. Place salmon and oil in a medium bowl. Season. Toss to coat. Thread onto skewers (see note).
  • Step 3 Make Dill dressing: Place all ingredients in a screw-top jar. Season. Secure lid. Shake to combine.
  • Step 4 Place cucumber and radish in a bowl. Drizzle over 1 tablespoon dressing. Toss.
  • Step 5 Heat a barbecue plate on high heat. Cook skewers, turning for 4 minutes for medium or until cooked to your liking. Serve skewers with salad, potatoes and remaining dressing.
